EMPOWERING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: WORLDGATE AND AIDFI'S LEMONGRASS OIL INITIATIVE
For years, Worldgate has been a steadfast supporter of AIDFI in their journey toward sustainable development, helping bring lemongrass oil and distillates to the market. In turn, AIDFI has established long-term sustainable partnerships with the Anangue Essential Oil Producer’s Association (AEOPA) and the Mambugsay Essential Oil Producer’s Association (MEOPA) to boost their lemongrass oil production.
Empowered farmer members cultivate lemongrass using natural methods and proper farming techniques. Many of these farmers, who are largely tenants, previously farmed without any erosion control measures, which led to dwindling production. Consequently, there were times when they couldn’t plant for months and had to rely on loans with exorbitant interest rates.
Lemongrass can thrive for up to five years, and once it matures, farmers can harvest it every two months. This staggered harvesting system allows for a steady income stream, reducing the immediate need for loans. Additionally, transportation costs are minimized since the processing factory is located right in the heart of the production area, which also creates job opportunities in boiling and distillation. The member farmers take pride in their unique initiative, focusing on both the production and processing of lemongrass.

Moreover, this project offers numerous environmental benefits, including erosion control, natural farming practices, and the integration of renewable energy in the factory. Innovative solutions like solar heating and generating electricity through solar and wind power further underscore this initiative’s commitment to sustainability. Currently, AEOPA is comprised of 26 empowered member farmers, while MEOPA has 19. Some farmers began expanding their operations last March, with the first cycle of lemongrass harvest expected in September 2018.
